A heart warming family story

60 years ago, on my first day of milking, I couldn't imagine being told to stop eating Cheddar. Cheesemaking has been in our family since 1902. As a boy (that's me - in my brand new milking uniform) I watched my mother, Ivy Clothier, perfect her famous Somerset recipe. It's won more prizes than any other and today it's still the UK's favourite Farmhouse Cheddar.

So, when I was diagnosed with high cholesterol, giving up cheese - my mother's cheese - was heartbreaking. Luckily for me, it was sad for my son, Richard.

Without telling me, he developed a special recipe of his own. His idea was to create a low fat Cheddar alternative with all the flavour that Wyke Farms is famous for. And, one day, he cracked it.

It contained 90% less cholesterol than Cheddar with only 1.3% saturated fat. It was also high in Omega 3, contained vitamin E and had as much calcium as regular Cheddar. You could cook with it too!

It's proved a real labour of love for our family business. We called it Leskol and put it into our range. I like to think I'll be around for a lot longer too. And I intend to make the most of the time with a new generation of cheesemakers - my beautiful grandchildren.
